Each episode is an absurd collage of shaggy dog tales (he once blew up his stove and ended up naked in the front yard with a machete), or mocking TV itself (in one scene, Lurie and his two co-stars sat on the couch and did nothing but syncopated head movements for quite some time, then thanked HBO for all the money), and dreamlike episodes of riding horses, floating into the clouds, or rolling tires through the yard. Sometimes there are flat melodramas with Sam Beckett-like dialogue. Among all this, we do see Lurie painting delicately and freely, his flattened panoramas holding the irreverence, love of language, and dead seriousness of poets like Paul Verschmeer or Charles Simic (look them up). I imagine his compositions are not planned, but discovered, as Lurie plays with water and pigment, finding what he's thinking about. Watch this show. It will tell you exactly how to paint.
Painting with John
Wednesday, 19 July 2023 14:06Painting with John is a TV show on its third season. The host, musician John Lurie, who is also a painter, was first presented in media shorthand as the anti-Bob Ross and this was a show that didn't teach you how to paint.
